These two talented Year 6 pupils were selected from over 60 boys to play for the U11s York Schoolboys team. A fantastic achievement and we are very proud of their hard work and determination to succeed.
The Y3/4 hockey team came 7th in the new Quicksticks competition. This was held at Vale of York Secondary School on the 12th October. A fantastic achievement and great fun!
Recently, another of our talented Year 6 pupils played in the Yorkshire Closed Girls U11s Squash Championship in Pontefract. She fought off stiff opposition against seeded players who are nationally ranked and with determination and skill, went onto win the finals and took the title. Ruby’s coach said “she is a credit to both her parents and Dunnington School”. Well done Ruby!
A fantastic start to the year with 12 cross country runners taking part in the York Schools event in September. A massive well done to Will in Year 6 who came 6th and qualified for the North Yorkshire School finals in March at Dalby Forest.
Sports news-May 2017
A big well done to the Y5/6 football team on their triumphant success in coming top of the York Schools league. A fantastic achievement!
We had 8 runners in KS2 who all took part in the cross country North Yorkshire finals at Dalby Forest in March. Superb efforts from all involved and thank you to the parents for taking time out to get them there and back.
The school netball teams took part in the cluster finals and despite winning a number of matches they unfortunately didn’t qualify for the York finals. However, many of the 2 teams were Year 5 pupils who have only had 2 terms of netball coaching and the progress they have made is brilliant. I am looking forward to next season to build on that progress!
I had the pleasure of taking 6 pupils to a fantastic inclusive sports day at Queen Margarets School in Escrick. This was a lot of fun and the children had a fantastic time trying out archery, blindfolded activities and bouncing on space hoppers!
A team of very enthusiastic Year 6 girls attended a football event with me in April. On a very cold and wet day they had a brilliant time enjoying various coaching sessions with York City and York College students. They played small matches against other local schools and learned more about the popular game. The girls approached the whole day with a smile on their faces and were a pleasure to take out of school.
Leading on from this we now have 2 ‘girls only’ football clubs set up for this half term. These are run by York City coaches and the response has been fantastic. Both clubs are now full but if successful, we will endeavour to provide further coaching beyond this half term.
York City are also in delivering curriculum support for Y2 (DA/LR) and Y3. Coaches are coming into support teachers and develop their skills and knowledge for teaching football.
Our PE curriculum specialist is working in Year 4 this half term supporting staff in their delivery of athletics. Simon Walton is a secondary PE teacher and will also be running a Y5/6 athletics club on a Thursday lunchtime and a Y4-6 tag rugby club after school.
Yorkshire cricket coach, Rachel Hildreth is delivering 4 weeks of cricket sessions to Y3/4 pupils. This forms part of a scheme called ‘Chance to Shine’ and is a national programme. She is also booked in to do a taster session for F/KS1 pupils with a new initiative called ‘Cricket Stars’. Maybe we will spot the next Jonny Bairstow!
The Y3/4 Tri Golf team took part in a fantastic festival at Strensall Golf Club. The sun shone and the children enjoyed a carousel of activities developing their putting, chipping and accuracy skills. They came 4th out of 12 teams that entered which was a fantastic result. Well done!
Year 6 Girls football festival- this was a fabulous day organised by North Riding FA and York City. The 8 girls I took with me were an absolute pleasure to spend the day with and they put 100% effort into everything that was asked of them. All went home tired and very enthusiastic about playing football!
I took a selection of keen Year 2 and 3 girls to York College to take part in a healthy schools/football afternoon. York City were providing the coaching and the workshops. All the girls had a brilliant afternoon and met lots of children from other primary schools.
Our Year 6 team came first in the Indoor Athletics cluster event and worked hard as a team to compete in many fun events. 18 children took part and each one competed in two field and two track activities. A superb win for Dunnington!
They competed in the York round and came a very credible 4th. Well done Year 6!
Cross Country at the Knavesmire- 24th September
Lots of children entered this huge event from R-Y6. Many schools from across York got involved on a very wet and windy day! They all ran really well and some were in a position to win a place in the North Yorkshire round.
The North Yorkshire competition held at Dalby Forest on 17th March 2016 saw some very impressive performances from KS2 runners doing Dunnington proud!
Netball- March 2016
We took 3 teams of Year 6 children to this festival. It was another cold and windy afternoon but this didn’t stop the fantastic standard of netball that took place.
One team from Dunnington won and got through to the York finals. This was held at Joseph Rowntree School in April and again, we competed well and the standard of netball was very high. We came a very impressive 4th!
Year 4 football tournament-March 2016
Year 5/6 football team for the 2015/16 season
Tri Golf Y3/4 -May 2016
Always a fabulous event and this year it was held at York Golf Club in Strensall. Tri Golf is very popular in primary schools for developing those early golf skills within a school based facility. It uses plastic chippers and putters with plastic balls. The children play all sorts of fun games and aim at large targets.
Our school team performed with great enthusiasm and despite not winning, they had a lot of fun and picked up new skills along the way. Well done!
Tennis Y3/4- May 2016
The tennis competition is a minature version of the real game. They play singles on a half court size with a softer, slightly larger ball. 4 children represented Dunnington in the York tournament at Wigginton Tennis Club and they all played brilliantly. So brilliantly in fact, that they won a place in the North Yorkshire finals that will take place on Monday 22nd June. I will update this page as and when I have more results on this one but we wish them lots of luck.
The tennis team came 4th in the North Yorkshire tournament and played amazing tennis. A fantastic morning played in a very hot dome tent at the Uni! Well done to all of them and thank to Mrs Booth who accompanied the children to this event.
Tennis Y5/6- May 2016
Our tennis team worked hard and played well to get into the semi- finals of the York festival. They narrowly missed out on the final by 5 points. Well done to all involved.
Cricket Y3/4 Drax Cup May 2016
The Drax Cup is an annual event and is aimed at developing kwik cricket skills in Y3/4 children. It is sponsored by Drax and organised by the Yorkshire Cricket Board. We have had Chance to Shine coaches in to school delivering 4 weeks of curriculum cricket sessions and the kids and teachers loved it! A lot of talented children were spotted!
The Drax team consisted of 10 children in total- 8 boys and 2 girls. It was held at Dunnington Cricket Club and the weather was hot and sunny…a perfect cricket type of day! The team worked hard and supported each other through every match. The children won all the matches they played, including the final and so are yet to take part in the North Yorkshire round next week. A superb day and many great memories made!
WE WON!!!! After 3 wins in the morning round, they went into the finals as winners of their group and then went onto to win the semi final and the final. A fantastic day of cricket and I was very proud of their teamwork, skill and support for each other.
They go on to play at Headingly and represent North Yorkshire in a tournament on the 8th July. They will be the warm up matches to a T20 match….it doesn’t get much better than that!!!
Cricket Y5/6- Cluster and York rounds May 2016
The Year 5/6 team also competed on the same day at Dunnington Cricket Club and they too had amazing success. The teamwork and skills on display were fantastic. They also qualified for the North Yorkshire finals on Monday 22nd June by winning every single match! An impressive achievement and credit to Dunnington Cricket Club for all their hard work with our children throughout the year.
The Y5/6 team narrowly missed out on a spot in the finals but all had a fabulous time in very wet conditions! A great team performance. Well done boys!
Swimming Gala February 2015
Our Year 5/6 team came 3rd in the East York finals….a brilliant achievement by all! The 8 children took part in individual races and a relay. The support was fantastic so thank you to all the parents and grandparents who helped and cheered the kids on.
Athletics Winners October 2015
Our Year 6 athletics team won the cluster Sportshall Athletics Competition at Joseph Rowntree school.
