We hope that you will find the following information about our classes helpful for the year ahead. We are very much looking forward to working with you and having an exciting and productive year.
Summer Term Updates!
This half term our topic title is ‘How can we grow our own salad?’ For the second half term our topic is ‘Oh I do like to be beside the seaside!’
In Literacy we will continue to work on our handwriting, presentation and spelling as key skills. We will continue work on time connectives, basic punctuation, conjunctions and adjectives. This will be done through writing stories, poems and non fiction texts about plants, trees, fruit and vegetables this half term and then related to the seaside in next half term.
In Maths we will be learning more about money and time, telling the time and problem solving. We will revisit shapes recognising, naming and describing the properties of 3d shapes and making models. We will look at length and also reading, writing and ordering numbers, using knowledge of place value. We will use this knowledge to add and subtract using number lines, hundred squares and practical objects.
In PE we will cover striking and fielding games, tri golf, athletics and sports day preparation.
As part of our topic we will look at plants. We will conduct science investigations into the best conditions for growing plants, and compare and sort seeds.
Each child will plant a broad bean at school. Your child will then bring the bean and diary home. Please could you remind your child to care for their bean and complete their diary? These are due back in school on Monday 22nd May where we will compare and read our diaries. There may even be prizes for the best diaries, regardless of how well the bean grew!
We will look at healthy eating and in art we will look at the work of Giuseppe Arcimboldo and his fruit and vegetable faces.
In Geography we will look at locations around the world where fruit and vegetables are grown and answer questions such as which food grows under the ground, which on bushes and which on trees?
We will also keep learning the names of continents and oceans around the world.
For all the objectives being covered please see the Thematic Overview
We believe it is important for you to be aware of what topics the children are learning at school. Click on the links below to access a copy of the curriculum overview for the year and the termly thematic overviews.
There will be various trips, special days/themed weeks and events throughout the year which we would love for you to be a part of. As always, if you do have any free time or any special talents or experiences you would like to share with the class, we would be very grateful for your support.
PE lessons will take place on Tuesdays and Fridays for Mrs McGowan’s class and on Mondays and Fridays in Mrs Abbott and Mrs Rowntree’s class. However, please ensure kit is brought in on a Monday and taken home on a Friday as sometimes timetables may change.
The children’s kit should include: white T-shirt (no football shirts please), black shorts, plimsolls/indoor use and trainers/outdoor use and, as the weather gets colder, a tracksuit or sweatshirt and jogging bottoms (black preferably). Please ensure that the children have both indoor and outdoor footwear in their kit throughout the year.
Jewellery is not permitted for PE and children with long hair will need to use a bobble. Also it is vital your child has a water bottle with them every day and that this, along with all their kit and uniform is named
We actively encourage you to hear your child read every day and would appreciate a comment being made in their reading diaries. Year 2 pupils will also be taking part in a mental maths home task called ‘Mad Maths’. In addition to this, there will be a few spellings a week to learn; the list of words can be found on our homework page and the children will be sent home with a hard copy.
If you feel there is something you would like to discuss with us (that is not urgent), please make an appointment. Mrs McGowan welcomes appointments on Mondays after school, Mrs Abbott is available on a Thursday after school and Mrs Rowntree is available on a Monday after school.
At times you may not have time to pop in and see us so our emails are listed below. We would like to stress that we will endeavour to check our e-mail on a daily basis but this may not always be possible therefore please be patient if a response is required – we will deal with it.
FOR ALL ISSUES REQUIRING URGENT ATTENTION PLEASE PHONE THE SCHOOL OFFICE AND WE WILL GET BACK TO YOU.
We actively encourage Year 2 children to be as independent as possible when coming into school and sorting their own belongings efficiently. They will be practising spellings at 8.55am whilst the register is being taken. We do ask that pencil cases and toys are not brought into school – with the exception of birthday assembly days and that any money coming into school is sent in a named envelope or done via Parent Pay.
