Year 4 Home Learning w/c 22.6.20

Hello Year 3 and Year 4, we hope you are all ok. We continue to be amazed by the work that you are sharing with us on Seesaw and we are very impressed with your motivation to complete all the tasks we set. We hope you have enjoyed the tasks including finishing the roman adventure story, completing the David Hockney art work and creating the optical illusion in Science. We have continued to enjoy chatting to you and your parents and we particularly enjoy seeing the videos that you post on Seesaw. Don’t forget, we also love finding out about the other fun activities you have been doing. Here are your suggested activities for this week.

This week, alongside weekly spelling practice, reading and timetables practice on TTRockstars, you will find a SPAG activity and four White Rose Maths lessons. At the bottom of the page, you will also find a range of activities and tasks from the non-core subjects. Alongside this, BBC bitesize are putting up daily lessons from every subject. Just click on the link below, find your year group and choose what subject you want to learn about! The Maths videos will now appear in this website link as White Rose Maths have teamed up with BBC Bitesize. However, please check under the maths section below to check for any weekly changes to the White Rose Homelearning plan. We may alter the online plan to recap some topic areas which we feel would be beneficial to the children. 


A message to Parents/Guardians: Whilst there is a range of activities from across the curriculum on the school website for your child/children, please note that there is no expectation for them all to be completed. We encourage the children to do as much as they can but we also understand, and from all the wonderful photos and videos on Seesaw, that children are following their own interests during this time and working hard on different projects at home alongside their home learning. Which is great to see!

This week’s English is based on Aliens which is linked to our new English science- fiction topic. It will be a combination of English skills including comprehension and some word/ sentence level tasks. We will split the tasks over the week. Below is a copy of the whole booklet.

We hope you all enjoyed completing your task on Optical illusions. We have certainly enjoyed seeing them on Seesaw. Can you remember what the scientific name is for the reason why the optical illusions occur?

This week’s science is also a practical activity which will once again involve you using “Working Scientifically” skills. We will include the whole sheet on the website so you can choose which of the activities you would like to do. Try to take photos to put on Seesaw and note down any thing you noticed or any changes that you made

Geography – My links with the world

North or South? – To identify the position and significance of the Equator, Northern Hemisphere, Southern Hemisphere in the context of researching countries in different hemispheres.

Find three countries of your choice; one that lies in the Northern Hemisphere, one in the Southern Hemisphere and one along the Equator. Complete the attached worksheets with your research. Which countries will you choose?

You could use an atlas, a globe, Digimaps or the internet to help you with your research.

Religious Education

This week’s RE activity is linked to The Beatitudes. There is a powerpoint and a sheet to help you.

The Beatitudes are a list of blessings from God which can be found in the Bible in Matthew 5:1-12.

Write down all the blessings that you have in your life.



 Archaeologists and what they do

This week you are going to find out about archaeologists and the job they do.  Work through the Powerpoint and video to find out more and complete the activity on the last slide.

Which of your favourite belongings did survive after 1000 years?


Art  –

This week, we want you to take a photograph of nature. You can use an iPad/tablet/computer/camera or phone to do this. This may seem like a simple activity but we want you to focus on the composition, how things are arranged, colours and light and dark areas. You may need to crop or edit your photograph to get the finished look you are after.

Here are some simple tips to help you to take the best photograph that you can:

1. Keep your eyes peeled for a good situation. What wildlife is in you garden? Is the light of the sun or moon creating a really nice setting? Can you see a reflection? A good photographer always has their eye out for a good shot.

 2. Decide what to include. What needs to be in the shot? Obviously, the subject but what else? Is there something relevant in the background? If there is, include it. If in doubt, include it and you can crop your photo later if you need to get rid of things on the edge.

 3. Is it better portrait or landscape? Have a look at what you want to include and decide if it is better landscape or portrait. This is all to do with which way round you hold the camera. If in doubt, take your photo both ways round and see what looks better later.

4. Experiment with angles. Don’t just take a photo from where you are standing. This might be right for some situations but you can be more adventurous with your shots. Try a shot while sitting down or holding your arms up high and shooting down on the subject. Try from one side or the other, or even from behind. You may be surprised at how much better a photo can be just by varying the angle.

 5. Choose your focus. You need to decide which bit of your photo is the most important and make sure that this bit is in focus and not blurred.

Here are some more ideas for keeping active. We hope you enjoyed having a go at last week’s challenges. Did you enjoy The Sock Challenge?

The first one is called The Sock Ladder challenge

Who knew that socks could be such a useful piece of PE equipment?  Again, you can make this easier or harder for yourself by moving the socks or altering the length of time that you spend on the activity. Try not to touch the socks as you move up and down the ladder. Get someone to video you doing this and put it on Seesaw.

Make sure that you stay safe and ensure that you have plenty of room to do the activity.

French – Hobbies and Holidays



Have a look at the BBC Ten Pieces Website.

For this week’s activity, we would like you to learn about Cuban rhythms. You will listen to a piece from one of Mrs Todd’s favourite musicals, West Side story. Have a look at the website below. It will give you some ideas for activities to do and some music to listen to.



If you can, check on Seesaw because there may be additional activities on there to complete. This week, there is a fun activity to help you practise your French greetings.

Also, there is a the Great Yorkshire Creature count to do, Origami and the Virtual School Games.

There is also a link on for another collective worship from Father Nick which will be great. We know a lot of you enjoyed listening and singing along to him last time. We will also post a link for a quiz which has come from Father Nick too.
